Fowler Welch carries Jersey Royals

Spalding, Lincolnshire, UK:  Fowler Welch is in ‘peak-time’ operation as the UK’s sole transport provider of Jersey Royals, the Channel Island potato variety, direct from the Jersey Royal Company.

The seasonal operation, managed from  Fowler Welch’s Hilsea consolidation centre, has peak volumes of 1,500 tonnes of potatoes on the move every day. The Jersey Royal Company will produce a crop of 25,000 tonnes this year.

Fowler Welch is consolidating and delivering Jersey Royals to almost all the UK’s major supermarket retailers, plus secondary manufacturing sites and wholesale markets.

“It’s great that we have been able to build on the business we have done in the past with Jersey Royals, and secure their entire UK distribution volumes,” said Jonathan Lee, business development manager at Fowler Welch, “The volume peaks during May and June, and, once again, we have been able to demonstrate our capability in coping with the peaks and troughs of delivering fresh and chilled retail volumes.”

The Jersey Royal has EU protection of designation of origin. The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is an official recognition granted by the EU to protect the product as it is produced in its country of origin.
