Brakes collects Environmentally Efficient Logistics award

London UK: Food service industry supplier, Brakes Group, has won the Environmentally Efficient Logistics category at the Foodservice Footprint Awards.

Brakes beat competition from the 3663 and Reynolds to take the Foodservice Footprint award is the first awards programme dedicated to recognising sustainability and environmental excellence in the foodservice industry.

The judges were impressed by the strategy and achievements of Brakes Group’s environmentally efficient logistics initiatives, said the organisers. Brakes, in the last year alone, cut 442 tonnes of CO2 by removing a million kilometres of journeys. This was done by better routeing of its EU and UK rail freight, using double-decker trailers, instigating more economic driving practices, and using low roll resistant tyres and fuel-efficient lubricants.

James Armitage, Brakes Group marketing director, said: “Our corporate sustainability and environmental objectives are a core element of our business focus.

“Winning this award highlights the improvements we are making year-on-year which are benefiting our customers and their consumers alike – especially in how we deliver our products.”

The judging panel included; David Clarke, chief executive of the Assured Farming Scheme; Lorna Hayes, food chain adviser of the National Farmers Union; and, Bethan Wood, programme director of environmental stewardship and carbon management at Glasgow University.

Brakes Group turns over £2.6bn, supplying the foodservice industry in the UK, Ireland, France and Sweden. The group comprises specialist businesses supporting caterer needs, including own brand ranges.
