Carrier Transicold plans more efficient technology for US

Louisville, KY, US:  Carrier Transicold is unveiling the next step in its trailer refrigeration products offering greater performance and efficiency with the cleanest technology possible, said Carrier Transicold’s David Kiefer, director of marketing and product management speaking at the Mid-America Trucking Show yesterday.

The next generation technology will reduce engine power by 18 to 20% and enable 5 to 20% lower fuel consumption, compared to previous models, Kiefer said.  These features will apply to both of Carrier Transicold’s trailer refrigeration platforms: the Vector hybrid diesel-electric and the X2 series of belt-driven units.

The developments will meet upcoming Environmental Protection Agency emissions rules and operator demand to cut fuel consumption in the face of rising fuel prices.  Compressor and generator design modifications to improve efficiency, performance and reliability also are expected to reduce the weight of the Vector hybrid units by more than 8%, while the X2 Series will need 2% less refrigerant, thus lowering Greenhouse Gas GHG emissions, Kiefer said.

The technology includes a 2.2-litre diesel engine that is “intelligent,” by means of sensors and an electronic control module. Kiefer said the technology improves cooling capacity for most applications, resulting in up to 20% faster pulldown and more reliable operation in hotter ambient conditions, improved durability and longer running.

The technology, particularly the engine emissions system that significantly reduces emissions, exceeds EPA Tier 4 compliance and requirements by the California Air Resources Board, Kiefer said.
