European demand for heavy trucks slumps

Brussels, Belgium: Demand for heavy trucks within the European Union fell 18% on the year in May as most major markets shrank, according to data from European auto industry association ACEA.

The association said 18,562 new heavy trucks were registered in May, but results varied, with the UK posting growth of 16%, while Germany, France, Spain and Italy saw demand slip by 14%, 23%, 26% and 42% respectively.

Truck sales are a key indicator of economic activity and foreshadow overall economic output.
