Kiveton, Sheffield, UK: Greencore is replacing its entire tractor and chilled trailer fleet under a new contract hire agreement with Ryder.
Ryder has worked with Greencore for 25 years and won this latest contract by competitive tender. The new vehicle order, which will provide better fuel economy, is for 25 x 44 tonne 6×2 DAF 460hp tractor units matched with 27 single temperature trailers built by Montracon.
Under Ryder’s specification, the trailers have been fitted with Carrier refrigeration units and feature bespoke recessed load restraints to maximise space and minimise damage when loading. Ryder is also supplying a spare tractor unit and a 4×4 dock spotter to position the trailers in Greencore’s depot.
Greencore manufactures convenience foods for retailers, manufacturers and airlines. Its fleet is based at its manufacturing facilities in Kiveton, Sheffield distributing throughout the UK. Each vehicle travels some 550 miles a day.
Greencore has improved acceleration and fuel efficiency by upgrading the tractors from 410 bhp to 460 bhp, following consultation with Ryder. A Greencore spokesman says: “Using a contract hire agreement with Ryder gives us peace of mind. Not only do we have a single point of contact for our tractors and trailers, but we also have the reassurance that our fleet is continually being maintained.”
“Ryder’s flexibility in extending the contract for our existing fleet, whilst we wait for delivery of the new vehicles, has been very useful in helping us manage our costs, and is an important factor in preparing for a smooth transition. The reliability and efficiency of our fleet is particularly important, not only because of our national 24-hour distribution operation, but also because of the very tight delivery slots that we must meet for every customer.”
Robin White, sales and marketing director of Ryder Europe, said: “Ryder is delighted to be continuing its long term relationship with Greencore. This contract showcases the company’s wide ranging in-house levels of expertise in tractors, trailers and fuel efficiency. It demonstrates what can be achieved through working in close consultation with our customers.”
