Paint-on insulation

Boston, Massachusetts, US:  An additive for paint applied to any metal surface will produce a layer of insulation that will outperform traditional materials such as polyurethane foam.

The additive, called Enova aerogel, developed by Cabot Corporation is a high performance thermally insulating coating formulation suitable for water -based paint that reduces thermal conductivity, minimizes thickness and heat loss.

Cabot researchers say that a 1mm coating containing Enova aerogel applied to insulating cold surfaces, helping to eliminate freezer burns and to reduce power needed to keep contents cold.

The additive, launched at the European Coatings Show in Nuremberg, Germany, is aimed at formulators and paint manufacturers.
