Pinkertons’ flexible friend

Armagh, Northern Ireland, UK: Gray & Adams (Ireland) has developed a movable, two-piece ‘mattress’ bulkhead with integral door to provide single or dual temperature operation for Pinkertons’ latest vehicle, a 10-tonne Mercedes-Benz Atego.

The bulkhead can be positioned between shelving modules to create either 50:50 or 75:25 splits in the cargo area. This allows Pinkertons to configure the vehicle to suit the load, and maintain temperature integrity. The bulkhead can be removed altogether for single-temperature operation and the PVC finish is easily cleaned.

Armagh-based Pinkertons is a fresh meat supplier but its transport needs changed when it acquired sandwich and hot food maker Ashwood Agencies last September. Previously Pinkertons distributed products at chilled temperatures but now needed to transport frozen foods as well.

David Gibson, sales manager at Pinkertons says: “We were taking on an entirely new type of business and uncertain as to how quickly it will take off, and how much fresh and how much frozen product we would have to carry… we were keen to make the load area in our new vehicle as flexible as possible, so we could deal with a range of volume requirements.”

The Gray & Adams insulated box has a ThermoKing T-800R Spectrum fridge and is on a 10-tonne Mercedes-Benz Atego 1018 chassis: Pinkerton’s biggest chassis so far. Previously it used 5 and 7.5-tonners.
