Safety lines at Morrison’s new distribution centre

Bridgwater, Somerset, UK: Clearly visible from the M5, Morrison Supermarkets’ new £90m regional distribution centre in Bridgwater will be fully operational early in 2012 and will serve all its 65 stores in the South West and South Wales handling 1.8 million cases a week.

The striking green building is clad with horizontal panels of various willow colours all inspired by the famous ‘Willow Man’ which stands close by overlooking the motorway.

The centre has an overall floor area of 70,000sq metres comprising ambient, chilled and frozen warehouses.  To ensure the safety of the 1,000 staff employed at the site, over 6,000 metres of safety walkway lines and 500 pedestrian symbols were required.

RapidShield was used for the floor and markings.  This is a UV-curable floor coating system which once applied to a prepared, clean floor, is cured instantly by a portable unit that emits UV-light, turning the coating into a solid hard wearing, easily cleaned film which creates a strong bond to the substrate.

Morrison’s had previous experience of the durability and cleanability of RapidShield at other of its sites.

Quality Marking Services undertook the work using special floor masks for the line markings and symbols.
