Telford International Railfreight Park names new operator

Telford, Shropshire, UK:  DB Schenker Rail has been appointed by Telford and Wrekin Council to run Telford International Railfreight Park.

The rail-freight depot has struggled since it opened in 2009 at a cost of £10m. Last year John G Russell Limited pulled out of its 15-year lease after just two years running the Telford International Railfreight Park. John G Russell said it could not sustain the depot’s losses.

Schenker plans to increase volumes at the depot, which can load or unload up to four trains a day, The 26-acre site in Donnington was part-funded by £4.2m of EU money, and DB Schenker was appointed after a formal EU procurement process.

Schenker will take on the connection charges and operating costs at the site, Telford and Wrekin Council said.
