Middleton, Manchester, UK: Tesco is reoccupying a chilled and cold storage distribution unit in Middleton that it had left in 2010.
The decision to use it again was sparked by the extra demand for food caused by the coronavirus, according to an article in North West Place.
Tesco had relocated its North West distribution centre to Widnes in 2010. It kept the lease on the Middleton site, making occasional use of the unit: for example Booker, which was taken over by Tesco, used it to store beer during the 2018 World Cup.
Tesco had been looking to sub-let the unit at Stakehill Industrial Estate as the 35-year lease still has five years left to run.
However, it has decided to reoccupy the site for one month initially to deal with the spike in demand for food, with a view to staying longer if necessary.
