Ulm, Germany: Fuel cell maker Nikola, and truck maker Daimler Truck, have separately announced plans for electric and hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks.
US-based Nikola has signed a deal to raise £550m towards development.
Mark Russell, Nikola’s chief executive, said that the latest development will accelerate the company’s ability to get its trucks into production at Iveco’s factory in Ulm, Germany, which is scheduled for 2021.
Daimler Truck has launched Daimler Truck Fuel Cell, a joint venture with Volvo to develop hydrogen fuel cells for commercial vehicles.
The fuel cell company’s creation follows the announcement in April of Daimler and Volvo’s joint venture to develop, produce and commercialise hydrogen fuel cell systems for trucks and buses.
