Dover, UK: The solution to traffic chaos come 1 January when trucks arrive at ports but without the necessary customs documents is to force drivers to obtain a special Brexit passport – a Kent Access Permit – before entering Kent.
Britain will have a border with Northern Ireland and also one cutting Kent from the rest of the country.
Labour MP Angela Eagle asked whether this would mean police guarding roads into Kent. “Who’s going to be patrolling the Kent borders to make sure that no lorry goes into Kent if it hasn’t got that passport?” she asked. “Where are the border posts for going into Kent going to be? It’s all very well saying we are going to need it, but are we going to have Kent border police or border guards?”
A Kent Access Permit – how the civil service loves an acronym – is likely to be announced next week as part of the second border operating model proposals.
