Brexit: the voices get desperate

London, UK: Talks between the UK and EU are due to resume in Brussels in a final bid to reach a post-Brexit trade deal.

Disputes over fishing and business competition rules remain and the mood is not optimistic according to press reports.

Prime minister Boris Johnson will speak to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen this evening (Monday).

If no deal is done by the end of the year, the UK and EU will introduce tariffs and border checks on goods. There is the added complication of Northern Ireland which is set to remain within the EU under the terms of the Northern Ireland protocol., However, the UK government is planning to unilaterally amend this treaty.

Duncan Buchanan, RHA, policy director said in a Tweet: “Only one thing to say today re Brexit. With a Free Trade Agreement January will be between a shambles and catastrophe for supply chains. Without an agreement, it won’t be that good.”

His downbeat assessment reflects the pessimistic mood in the logistics industry.
