“Europe’s largest truckstop” opens in Ashford

Ashford, Kent: The Ashford International Truckstop, with the capacity for 650 HGVs, has been officially opened. It will replace an existing lorry park nearby, which will close tomorrow (7 December).

GSE Property Group, which owns the lorry park, said it had been fitted with a bar, games room, kitchen, laundry facilities, and bedrooms for drivers. The truckstop’s website claims that the site is the “largest in the UK and Europe”.

Logisitcs UK said the site was “a welcome addition for hauliers working in Kent”.

Rod McKenzie, managing director of policy and public affairs at the Road Haulage Association Tweeted: “Good to see the new truckstop at Ashford being launched – but our industry needs more if this sets the standard.”

This new site was opened on 3 December by Transport minister Baroness Vere, and Ashford MP Damian Green.
“Our truckers are the lifeblood of our economy,” said Vere. “If we don’t look after them, they won’t look after us,”

The Treasury pledged £32.5m in funding to improve lorry parks in October’s Budget.
