Preston, UK: James Hall & Co has three new rigid reefers working on a Spar contract, using Carrier Transicold’s Syberia refrigeration.
The multi-temperature refrigeration systems are 18-tonne Volvo FEs with Gray & Adams bodies.
The new vehicles replace older Carrier-cooled trucks assets and will deliver fresh produce and groceries to Spar outlets in northern England.
“Carrier’s engineless systems are completely new to the business,” said Ian Farnworth, fleet manager, James Hall & Co.
“As a company we are conscious of our carbon footprint, so the main driver for adding these vehicles was to help start the move away from fossil fuels. With the approaching changes to red diesel rates we had looked at a range of options, but the Carrier systems offered an ideal solution. So far, we’ve been delighted with their performance.”
The Syberia units are powered from the truck engine using an hydraulic pump connected to the power take-off to drive a generator that delivers electrical power to the fridge regardless of truck engine speed.
The Syberia has a rapid temperature pull-down capability and operates at Piek-compliant levels (below 60 dB) that suits urban delivery routes.
The new trucks join an 80-vehicle mixed temperature-controlled vehicle and trailer fleet, which already uses Carrier ‘s Supra Vector fridges
“Carrier Transicold has held a place on our fleet for more than eight years. No matter the type of unit, we’ve found them to be consistently reliable and able to tackle anything we ask of them,”Farnworth said.
The trucks are expected to clock 100,000km a year and operate for seven years. The fridges are covered by Carrier full-service maintenance packages that include annual temperature control testing and certification, regulatory checks and access to the Carriers emergency call service.
