Chesterfield, UK: Magnavale has opened a standalone cold store with blast freezing dedicated to Category 3 animal by-products, also known in the industry as Cat 3.
Animal by-products are split into categories, 1, 2 and 3, where 1 and 2 are high risk, whereas category 3, although not intended to be consumed by humans, is classed as low risk, for instance slaughterhouse material that was once passed fit for humans but is unwanted due to commercial reasons. Many category 3 animal by-products are used to produce raw and processed pet food.
The cold storage licence expands services for existing customers.
