Redditch, UK: Oakland International has received formal approval from the Science Based Targets initiative for its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The approval is based on a 2040 target for 90% reduction with an accelerated 2030 target of 42%
Oakland International sustainability manager Vera Bruntink said: “Oakland set ambitious targets that have been verified by the initiative as being in line with the latest climate science requirements to combat climate change, and holding verified targets ensures Oakland’s targets are backed by science and that we are genuinely contributing to the race towards net-zero.
“Although SBTi’s [Science Based Targets initiative] net zero target is 2050, Oakland has targeted 2040 instead as they believe we cannot wait until the last possible moment to reduce emissions. The effects of climate change are happening already, so we need to make a change sooner rather than later and together with Oakland’s long history of working towards reducing emissions, having set targets delivers a clear roadmap and motivation to accelerate this journey.”
In May 2021, Oakland International joined the Business Ambition for 1.5 degree C Campaign and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Race to Zero, in order to contribute as a business to achieve net-zero global emissions by 2050 and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C.
