Asda drivers in Rochdale call off strike action

Rochdale, UK: Strike action among Wincanton drivers on the Asda contract in Rochdale has been called off after the workers accepted an improved pay offer of 8.25%. The drivers were also offered premium overtime rates.

The Unite union had previously warned that Asda and its customers were facing nationwide shortages of chilled goods due to the proposed walkout from the drivers.

As a result, Unite says that the planned strikes due to take place on the following dates: 13, 15, 17, 20, 26, 28 and 30 December and 2 January have been called off and the dispute is at an end.

Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: “This is a strong result for the hardworking HGV drivers based at Asda’s Rochdale distribution centre. Our workers deserve fair pay – which Asda and Wincanton can afford – and by them standing together we have achieved just that.”

Unite regional officer, Paul Lomax, added: “It’s encouraging to see an offer that reflects the importance of our members.”
