Concerns continue over freight movements between GB and NI

Belfast, Northern Ireland: Logistics UK and the Road Haulage Association (NI) met with representatives from HMRC and the Trader Support Service in Belfast this week to discuss the “continuing and upcoming issues hauliers face with moving goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.

John Martin, policy manager Northern Ireland, RHA, said: “These are increasing costs, creating delays and reducing efficiency. Issues include the definition of at risk of goods entering the EU single market, the need for traders to understand their responsibilities, no viable IT solution to streamline data entries, along with confusion over commercial invoices and commodity codes.

”There are also delays by authorities at the ports, disruption to “just in time” delivery schedules and liability for delays and incorrectly declared goods.

“All these ultimately impact on the price consumers or businesses have to pay. A strong message was sent to policymakers that they actually need to listen to the haulage community if they want to attempt to address these issues going forward!”
