Sainsbury’s appoints new retail and tech bosses

Sainsbury’s has revamped its leadership team, welcoming new chiefs of retail and technology.

BP exec Tracey Clements is joining the supermarket’s operating board, taking on the newly created position of chief retail, logistics and supply officer, The Grocer reported.

Her position combines all of the business’s retail, digital, customer experience, supply and logistics capability in one place.

In addition, Sainsbury’s chief marketing, data and sustainability officer Mark Given has been named as its new chief technology, marketing and data officer.

Former Asda CIO chief information officer Rob Barnes is also set to join Sainsbury’s in October as its new chief technology officer, reporting to Given.

The supermarket’s chief commercial officer Rhian Bartlett is set to take charge of sustainability under her expanded position of chief commercial and sustainability officer.

Sainsbury’s is also restructuring Argos’s retail and transformation teams, who will go on to report directly to managing director for Argos and chief strategy officer Graham Biggart.

Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts said: “I’m delighted to welcome Tracey to our operating board. Her breadth of experience, energy and customer-first mindset make her an outstanding addition to our leadership team and I’m confident she will play a pivotal role in accelerating our plan and shaping the next chapter of our Sainsbury’s business.

“Alongside Tracey, we’re strengthening our leadership across technology, commercial and sustainability, all areas that are critical to delivering our next level strategy.”

He continued: “With Rhian taking forward our combined commercial and sustainability ambition, Mark uniting technology, marketing and data, Graham leading our group strategy and the transformation of Argos, and Rob joining us as CTO, we’re building the momentum and the capabilities to move faster, serve customers better and unlock long-term growth across the group.”

Last month, Sainsbury’s head of own-label product development and innovation Claire Hughes stepped down from the grocery giant for personal reasons, according to The Grocer.

The group’s director of fresh product innovation James Campbell is set to succeed Hughes, under the newly created role of director of product and innovation.
