To safeguard its homecare pharmacy deliveries and nationwide distribution, TCD Medical has partnered with Thermo King®, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand of Trane Technologies. Facing the challenge of delivering small-volume pharmaceuticals under strict temperature conditions, the company has added Thermo King ColdCube™ units to its fleet.
“Maintaining the quality and integrity of medical and biological products during transport is crucial for safeguarding public health and patient safety,” said Juan Urmeneta, product management leader at Thermo King EMEA. “Our partnership with TCD Medical showcases how an unwavering, uninterrupted cold chain is possible with advanced temperature control technologies. Thermo King’s GDP-qualified solutions, including ColdCube™, support every step of the process, from long-haul routes to last-mile distribution and flexible, portable storage. Equipping their fleet with ColdCube™ containers, TCD Medical ensured life-saving medicines reach patients safely, reliably, and in perfect condition.”
TCD Medical recognised inefficiencies in transporting small loads from compounding facilities to hospitals or patients using large vehicles, prompting the need for a more suitably sized and precise solution. Thermo King UK recommended ColdCube™ portable containers. These containers provide accurate heating, cooling, and freezing for medicines, and, importantly, can operate on the van’s battery even during a vehicle breakdown. This feature reduces the risk of temperature deviations and helps ensure product safety throughout transit.
Currently, TCD Medical operates primarily 330-litre ColdCube™ models installed in vans and a 915-litre unit in conjunction with their cold store. ColdCube™ containers support temperatures from –28 °C to +28 °C, making them suitable for chilled, ambient, or frozen consignments. With battery, vehicle, and hybrid-powered options, the units can run extended periods without mains supply. All models hold Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and ATP certifications, ensuring compliance, quality, and safe transport for pharmaceuticals.
“Temperature mapping confirms Thermo King ColdCube™ units eliminate the risk of temperature variation inside our load space and keep running if the vehicle stops,” said Chris Sharp, Director of Quality & Operations at TCD Medical. “We can easily convert standard vans into dual-temperature vehicles and move units between vehicles to maintain operational continuity. Remote temperature monitoring provides full oversight, supporting our business growth and enabling new services such as rental, with seamless support and calibration from Thermo King.”
