Africa’s largest cold store opens in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya: A new temperature-controlled distribution centre for food and pharmaceuticals is to open in Nairobi. The site covers 17,700sq meters and can accommodate up to 18,000 pallets serving horticulture, meat, poultry, and seafood, as well as food manufacturing, supermarkets, quick-service restaurants/hotels, and pharmaceuticals.

Funding for the site is by the Arch Cold Chain Solutions Fund, an investment adviser, as well as the European Investment Bank, which contributed $15 million of the total funding of $81 million.

The warehouse is built to Leed standards, and claims to be the first in Africa. Up to 30% of its energy will come from renewable power, mainly solar panels.

The warehouse will serve export and import markets in eastern Africa and is planned to be one of several similar developments supporting eastern and central African markets.
