Moita, Portugal: German discount supermarket chain Aldi has opened its largest distribution centre in Portugal at a cost of €60m.
The 57,000sq metre warehouse, located in Moita, will supply goods to more than 150 stores in Portugal.
The site has a capacity of 14,000sq metres of refrigerated storage space, 89 loading and unloading docks and 60 parking spaces for trucks.
The distribution centre will help centralise the retailer’s logistics operations, which were previously split between two platforms in Montijo and Quinta do Anjo.
The new logistics operation is supported by the latest WMS (Warehouse Management System), used throughout the Aldi Nord group, as well as a robust voice technology picking system.
In terms of sustainability, the distribution centre has photovoltaic panels, capable of producing up to 1 MW and smart-lighting management, guaranteed by motion sensors, while the various cold stores have cooling systems that minimise harmful effects on the ozone layer.
