Lurgan, Northern Ireland: Cold storage giant Americold is restructuring its business in Lurgan “due to changes in customer demand”.
Local papers are reporting that almost 200 jobs are at risk, including drivers.
In a statement Americold said: “Due to changes in customer demand, Americold has determined that we must restructure and right size our transportation business in Lurgan to align with anticipated transport flows going forward.
“We are proposing a downsizing in fleet and personnel and will be entering a period of consultation with all affected staff.
“It is expected that the consultation period will last no longer than 90 days. We will provide more information as we work through this transition period.”
According to the Americold website, the Lurgan site has 72,000 cubic metres of capacity with space for 10,000 pallets. It provides chilled and frozen storage for a range of products including meat, poultry, dairy, bakery and fruit and vegetables. It also offers value-added services such as blast freezing, tempering, order picking and packing, co-packing and cross-docking.
The Lurgan business was previously owned by Agro Merchants. Americold bought the Agro Merchants Group in a $1.74bn deal in 2020.
