Södertälje, Sweden: Dagab, a subsidiary of Axfood, has taken delivery of a unique 64-tonne battery electric vehicle to support its chilled food operations in Gothenburg.
This one-of-a-kind addition is the latest development in Scania’s and Dagab’s partnership to deliver a fossil-free fleet. This forms part of Dagab’s plan to have a fossil-free and zero-emissions fleet by 2030
Beginning operations in Autumn 2022, the truck will be expected to complete two shifts daily. It joins the company’s existing fleet of BEVs and hybrid trucks currently operating in Stockholm, and forms part of a shared vision with Scania to create a fossil-free fleet.
Fredrik Allard, head of E-mobility, Scania, said: “The transition to electrification is complex. The technology and the electric vehicles are there, but it will take larger and faster measures to develop smart city solutions in charging infrastructure real.
“At Scania, we push to enable more companies to do what Dagab is doing.”
This one-of-a-kind vehicle shows how battery electric vehicles can be used to transport chilled or frozen food. By planning and using fast charging, the aim is to use this truck for two daily shifts, more than other vehicle on Dagab’s fleet, in order to deliver its customers great quality, availability and efficiency, Scania says.
The truck will play a role in decreasing the environmental impact it makes across its 300-450km daily route. By potentially adding a third shift, the company could further limit its impact on climate even more.
The integration of various technologies and using more durable components has allowed Scania to overcome the challenge of transporting chilled foods via a heavy battery electric vehicle. One example is the integration of power outlets for temperature control to minimise the overall energy consumption, Scania says.
Helena Blom, transport manager, Dagab, said: “To have fossil-free chilled food transport is necessary to lower the climate impact of our vehicles.
“When we use an electric truck of this size, we make a real contribution towards decreasing our emissions.
This is another step towards making our operations fossil-free and zero-emissions by 2030 at the latest.”
