London, UK: The government has taken issue with comments made to a Treasury select committee yesterday as reported in Global Cold Chain News.
A government spokesperson said: “Any suggestion of these sorts of measures is scaremongering and irresponsible in the extreme.”
“The UK has no issues with oil supply. In addition to domestically produced energy, the UK has access to diverse and flexible sources of oil, and we remain absolutely confident energy security and fuel supply will be maintained.”
The government says the UK holds oil stocks in the event of a major oil supply disruption. UK oil reserves are ‘significantly’ above the 90 days required by the IEA, it says.
“We have resources in place in the unlikely event of supply disruption,” the government spokesperson said.
“In the case of diesel, UK demand is met by a combination of domestic production and imports from a diverse range of reliable suppliers beyond Russia including the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and USA.”
