Brussels, Belgium: Diesel remains the fuel of choice for van operators Despite the brouhaha over alternatives, almost 93% of vans registered in the European Union, including the UK, ran on diesel, according to ACEA data.
Its figures show petrol accounted for 4.4% of van registrations, while electrical vehicles made up 1.2% of new van sales. All alternatively‐powered vehicles together held a combined market share of 2.8% last year.
Last year, the number of diesel vans registered in the European Union increased by 2.4% to 1,956,004 units with growth in sales in most markets apart from Italy and Spain in 2019. Demand for petrol-fuelled vehicles increased strongly with the exception of Germany
In 2019, demand for new electric vans grew by 22.9%, to reach 26,107 units, 1.2% of total EU light commercial vehicle sales. France and Germany were the biggest markets for these electric vehicles last year, making up almost 60% of all electric vans registered across the European Union.
4,577 new hybrid electric vans were registered in 2019 accounting for 0.2% of all light commercial vehicles sold in the region.
Italy and Spain were the largest EU markets for vans running on alternative fuels.
