EU truck registrations slump in face of coronavirus

Brussels, Belgium: Truck sales slumped in March falling by over 47% in the EU as the coronavirus epidemic took hold according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

All vehicle segments in all markets were down with the biggest falls in Italy (-66.1%), Spain (-64.4%) and France (-63.1%).

The effect of the March slump is to take down truck registrations in the first quarter of 2020 by 23.2% to 413,327 units. The four major markets, Spain (-31.7%), France (-26.9%), Italy (-26.6%) and Germany (-14.4%), all faced double-digit losses so far this year. UK data is no longer included in the association’s figures.
 
March registrations of light commercial vehicles took the biggest hit of all segments. with demand halving (-49.8%) compared to the year before.
 
New heavy commercial vehicles over 16t fell 38.0%), the ninth consecutive month of decline. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, registrations dropped in all European markets and especially in France, where demand for heavy trucks was slashed by more than half.
