Glasgow starts Scotland’s first low emission zone

Glasgow, Scotland: Glasgow City Council has implemented Scotland’s first low emission zone, taking effect today. The zone will operate continuously, covering an area of the city centre bounded by the M8 motorway to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south and Saltmarket/High Street to the east.

Fully electric vehicles comply with requirements but diesel-powered vans will need to be at the Euro 6 standard, Penalties for bringing a non-compliant vehicle into the zone will typically be set at £60, halved to £30 if paid early. The fine will be doubled for each subsequent breach detected, with a cap of £960 for HGVs.

Councillor Angus Millar, convener for climate and transport, said the vast majority – up to 90% – of vehicles currently entering the city centre will be unaffected.
