International road haulage permit system will damage trade

Tunbridge Wells, UK: Logistics UK has reiterated the dangers of the UK and the EU not managing to agree a trade deal, warning that an unfair international road haulage permit system would then come into play.

Elizabeth de Jong, policy director of Logistics UK, told Sky News and the Today programme on Radio 4, that around 2,000 permits are expected to be allocated to hauliers in the UK.

“However, there are 8,000 hauliers registered for international trade so only one in four would get a permit and then only for one journey at a time,” said de Jong. “That would have an amazing impact on trade.”

De Jong is confident that an agreement on a trade deal will be reached because it is in “all parties’ interests”.
