Mullingar, Ireland: Lidl Ireland has opened its newly extended Mullingar regional distribution centre.
Lidl spent €80m on the site which is one of the Lidl group’s largest worldwide and one of the largest distribution centres on the island of Ireland,
Lidl has also invested €1m on around 3,000 solar panels which should reduce the centre’s carbon output by some 220 tonnes per year, the company said.
Minister of State for European affairs and defence Peter Burke said that it was “a momentous occasion” for Mullingar and the wider food industry.
“With an investment of €80m, this facility will not only create 100 new jobs, but also make a significant contribution towards a more sustainable future by harnessing solar power to meet a substantial portion of its energy requirements,” Burke said.
Alan Barry, chief development officer at Lidl Ireland, said the centre was evidence of the company’s ongoing investment in the Irish food sector and Westmeath.
“This investment in Mullingar supports Lidl’s growing footprint of stores nationwide and is in line with our ongoing €550m three-year expansion plan, which we first announced in 2021,” he added.
The expansion will enable Lidl to increase capacity by a third, and the distribution centre will now serve all 177 Lidl branches nationwide, with capacity for 42,000 pallets.
