The application for the new RDC includes detailed proposals for an accompanying retail store as well as the demolition of four warehouses on a site owned by Lidl since 2008 to make way for the new RDC
Overall, there will be an increase in the total amount of warehouse and distribution floorspace due to a more space-efficient layout to meet modern operational requirements.
Lidl products are purchased throughout Europe and then packaged and distributed directly to the relevant Regional Distribution Centre (RDC), of which there are currently 14 in the UK, for onward distribution to its stores across the UK. The new RDC would represent the 15th owned and operated in the UK by Lidl.
It has been acknowledged that while the redevelopment for industry or warehousing is supported, the proposed food store would require satisfaction of the sequential test and policies in the development plan.
A separate reserved matters application for the warehouse is expected to be submitted shortly. Walsall Council is set to decide by March 2025.
