Majority of jobs lost at vehicle rental and contract hire firm as administrators wind the business down

Following earlier reports in the press that commercial vehicle hire and fleet management provider Prohire has lodged an application with the courts to appoint an administrator, latest reports indicate that the company is being wound down and the majority of jobs have been lost.

Prohire is a provider of contract hire, fleet management and rental services and has a fleet of about 3,400 vehicles including cars, light commercial vehicles (LCVs), trailers and trucks. Prohire Group Limited is the holding company of Prohire Limited.

The companies employed 80 people and had operations across multiple locations within Stoke-on-Trent, where its primary head office is located, as well as a secondary site in Tunbridge Wells in Kent.

Prohire filed the notice of intent last week and Timothy Vance and Samuel James Woodward of EY-Parthenon’s Turnaround and Restructuring Strategy team were appointed joint administrators of Prohire Limited and Prohire Group Limited on Friday 27 June 2025.

According to EY, Prohire has faced “liquidity challenges over several years” and, while the management team has “explored options to safeguard the future of the business, it has not been possible to raise the funding required to continue trading”.

As a result, the companies have been placed into administration and ceased providing services to customers whilst the administrators explore the possibility of novating contracts with customers and vehicle funders to new providers.

The majority of employees have been made redundant with immediate effect, with a small number retained to assist the joint administrators with an orderly wind-down.

In its most recent accounts, Prohire Ltd reported turnover of £53m.
