Nearly half the public support allowing EU nationals to work as lorry drivers in UK

London, UK: Nearly half of the public support the relaxing of immigration rules to allow EU lorry drivers to work in the UK, according to a new survey.

The poll, carried out by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, found that 47% of respondents supported the move while 21% opposed it.

And over half of respondents — 56% — said they supported adding lorry drivers to the UK’s Shortage Occupation List, compared to who 11% opposed it.

The poll of 2,000 people was carried out between 18-19 August.

Meanwhile, the driver shortage crisis continues to bite with McDonald’s reporting that it has run out of milkshakes and some bottled drinks at restaurants in England, Scotland and Wales.

The fast-food chain said it was facing supply chain issues affecting the availability of shakes and bottled drinks at its 1,250 outlets.

The boss of the Co-op revealed that the retailer is having to re-train staff as lorry drivers to try to address issues in the supply chain.

Steve Murrells told the Times that the Co-op is being forced to to reduce some ranges due to the ongoing problems.

He said: ‘The shortages are at a worse level than at any time I have seen.’
