Tesco builds robotic fresh food distribution centre

Aylesford, Kent: Tesco expects a new fresh food distribution centre in Kent, incorporating robotic automation technology, to contribute to its plans for £500m in efficiency savings.

Tesco highlighted the distribution centre when releasing its financial results for the year to 24 February. Pre-tax profit jumped to £2.3bn– the highest in more than a decade. Sales rose 7.4% to almost £61.5bn.

Construction has started at the distribution centre in Aylesford, Kent. Tesco also said that, along with developing AI technology solutions, an improved transport scheduling system and new stock assembly processes were “driving greater supply chain efficiency”.

The company has almost doubled the number of electric home delivery vans in its fleet to 571 – they now make up 11% of the fleet. The target is to be fully electric in the UK by 2030.
