Following its premiere at IAA Transportation 2026, Thermo King®, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand of Trane Technologies, has introduced the new Advancer S trailer refrigeration unit. The new unit is designed to help fleets respond to changing regulatory and operating requirements by reducing refrigerant global warming potential (GWP) without compromising temperature control, fuel efficiency, or operational performance.
Featuring R-454A, Advancer S reduces the GWP of the refrigerant by over 90% compared to
R-452A. While offering a significant reduction in GWP, the unit maintains the market-leading temperature management and industry-leading fuel and power efficiency of the A-Series portfolio. This means hauliers can benefit from the same high-level cooling capacity, rapid pulldown, and reduced direct operational expenditure.
Additional fuel efficiency can be achieved thanks to the Advancer EcoMode feature, which reduces diesel consumption by up to 50% compared to continuous mode, and offers a smart balance between temperature control and fuel efficiency based on cargo sensitivity and delivery profile. Power-agnostic by design, Advancer S can be integrated with AxlePower energy recovery technology or modular battery packs for hybrid and fully electric operations.
To provide complete transparency regarding the unit’s overall environmental impact, Advancer S is backed by an independent, third-party Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) certification. The LCA evaluates the carbon footprint of the unit across its entire lifespan, from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to its operational use phase and end-of-life recycling. The certificate empowers fleet operators with proven data needed to support their environmental reporting, measure Scope 3 emissions, and track progress against corporate sustainability targets.
“To accommodate the low-GWP refrigerant, and maintain the performance, we fully re-engineered the Advancer architecture,” said Juan Urmeneta, Product Management Leader, Thermo King EMEA. “LCA certification shows that up to 86% of a unit’s lifetime emissions stem from operation, primarily fuel consumption, while the refrigerant accounts for just 10% to 20%. This highlights why it has been critical to transition refrigerants without sacrificing ongoing fuel and energy efficiency.”
Built-In Safety for Operators and Drivers
The architecture of the Advancer S addresses the safety considerations of the refrigerant by integrating robust safety precautions into the unit’s core design. This includes a comprehensive risk management system with automated leak detection and concentration monitoring, which ensures peace of mind for fleet managers and drivers on the road.
Thermo King Advancer S single temperature units are now available across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa as part of Thermo King’s high-performing solutions ecosystem. Alongside sustainable refrigeration technology, Thermo King offers digital connectivity that turns data into measurable gains in uptime, resilience, and energy efficiency, as well as a market-leading dealer and service network to support customers on the road.
