London, UK: TIP is trialling a Sunswap battery and solar-powered refrigeration system fitted to a Chereau reefer. The trailer will operate as part of the fleet of a TIP customer on UK roads during the trial period.
TIP’s objective is to establish that the system functions at least as effectively as if powered by diesel. Throughout the trial, TIP will be receiving regular ‘performance’ reports on the system’s performance.
The Endurance system from Sunswap uses solar panels fitted to the roof of the trailer, in combination with a modular battery to provide emission-free power the trailer’s refrigeration unit. The Chereau reefer has been modified at its Reefer Trailer Centre, to enhance the performance of the solar technology. Adaptations include use of vacuum insulation panels and half-width sliding bulkheads for temperature-control of a smaller area when transporting a partial load.
A switch is also fitted to the rear door which turns off the evaporator when the door is opened so that energy is not lost, whilst a solid front evaporator protector prevents any waste or product getting into it, limiting its functionality.
