Scottsdale, Arizona, USA: Logistics operations at Morrisons and Sainsbury’s supermarkets have been affected by a ransomware attack on supply chain software provider Blue Yonder.
On November 21, Blue Yonder said that it had experienced “disruptions to its managed services hosted environment, which was determined to be the result of a ransomware attack”. Blue Yonder added that since learning of the incident, the team had been working with external cybersecurity firms to make “progress in their recovery progress.”
The supply chain software provider is used by a wide range of major supermarkets and suppliers in the US and UK. Blue Yonder’s UK client base includes Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose, according to The Grocer.
However, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s are the supermarkets known to have been affected. A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told US news site CNN that it had “contingency processes in place”.
Meanwhile, customers took to social media to express their frustration about fresh food shortages at Morrisons stores. A Morrisons spokesperson said: “Last week Blue Yonder suffered an outage which has impacted our warehouse management systems for fresh and produce. Ambient and frozen are unaffected.
“We are currently operating on our back-up systems and we’re working very hard to deliver for our customers across the country.”
