Crayford, UK: Temperature-controlled and dry freight firm Solstor said switching to Volvo Trucks’ turbo compound technology with I-Save had improved its fuel economy by up to 20% with a corresponding drop in carbon emissions.
The company has replaced 12 standard FH tractor units with new trucks this year. Graham Doe, Solstor managing director UK, said making the switch had been a “game-changer”.

Supplied by MC Truck and Bus, the new FH with I-Save 6×2 tractors have 500hp Euro 6 Step E engines. The turbo-compound tech sees the use of an extra turbine after the turbocharger to reuse excess energy from the exhausts. This allows energy to be converted to toque directly on the crankshaft to create more fuel-efficient engine.
“Our driver trainer worked closely with Volvo, analysing detailed reports generated every month to refine our team’s driving style over time for optimal performance,” Doe said.
“Through the initial trial it became clear the I-Save trucks were the best fit for our operations, which led us to transition our entire Dartford-based fleet to these models.”
