Livingston, Scotland: Cold Chain News usually reports new trailer acquisitions. Here, Grey & Adams reports how a 12 year trailer for Tesco has earned its keep.
Gray & Adams prides itself on trailers built to last, that with proper care and maintenance will run run like new for up to 12-15 years. And so it was with this 12-year-old ferry specification double deck trailer built for Tesco.
In March 2011, Tesco bought this ferry spec double-deck trailer for its Livingston depot to serve routes to the Shetland and surrounding islands: an 8-hour journey on rough seas notorious for damaging trailers in transit.
As well as the trailer being built to the double deck height specifications, it also included a galvanised chassis for durability, additional lashing rings for security during the crossing. For driver safety and comfort ground access rails for access while managing the electrical and air connections, were added. As well as this, Gray & Adam included an automatic park brake which activates when the air connection is removed.
A lot has changed on trailers over the past 12 years so no surprise that this trailer has a diesel fridge, although it does have electric capabilities.
Cliff Smith, fleet engineering manager, Tesco, told Grey & Adams: “Tesco own all our fleet, so it is important that each purchase is a quality investment, and we don’t have to prematurely replace. Gray & Adams offer a quality product which could withstand the challenging journey we needed the trailer for. This has allowed us to free up capital to invest in other areas of the fleet as we knew the trailer would be built to last. As well as the quality, we enjoy working with Gray & Adams as they provide solutions to challenges and work collaboratively with our team to overcome any blockers.”
