Call for infrastructure “fit for purpose”

London, UK: Road Haulage Association managing director Richard Smith is calling on the government to invest in infrastructure that is “fit for purpose” in order to keep the economy moving and competitive

Smith says that the government’s pledge to deliver on a pre-election promise to support local authorities by improving roads and addressing the decline of our road network is “welcome”.

“We need a strong network of roads which is safe and reliable with capacity to accommodate future growth in demand,” said Smith.

“We know the knock-on impact unsafe and unfinished roads can have for drivers and businesses, so investment such as this is positive news.

“With the final decision coming on the Lower Thames Crossing project on 4 October, it’s key that essential infrastructure projects for tackling congestion such as this are delivered.

“To keep the economy moving and competitive, our critical industry needs infrastructure which is fit for purpose. A thriving road transport sector is only as strong as the road network it operates on, and we’ll continue to campaign for investment in motorways, major roads and key projects.”
