John Ward at Morrisons’ transport division says: “Our busy schedule involves a significant number of couplings round the clock and that’s why it’s important to have the right fifth wheel to guard against mishaps and to provide easy driver handling.”

Morrisons operates 700 vehicles serving its 476 UK stores. Tractor and trailer couplings are frequent and very often performed during the night. Therefore, it is important for drivers to maximise safety and ease of handling.
The fifth wheel coupler, specified by Morrisons from Fontaine Europe, features an extended handle which allows easy operation without having to reach under the trailer. This not only avoids contact with the underside of the trailer but also provides a safety benefit. The Fontaine fifth wheel also incorporates a mechanism which prevents mis-coupling when tractors reverse onto the trailer during coupling. This ensures that the jaw of the coupler engages with the trailer king pin and locks securely into place.
